Patient Care
The Ambulatory Center of Excellence in Surgery (ACES)
and your doctor will provide you with quality surgical
services. Be sure to ask your doctor to schedule
your surgery at ACES.

One week before surgery:
- A Scheduling coordinator will contact you to obtain a
simple medical history and insurance information.
- Pre-operative tests will be scheduled prior to your surgical
procedure if required.
- Do not take aspirin, medication containing aspirin, motrin,
ibuprophen or Advil 1 week prior to surgery.
One or Two Days before Surgery
- Do arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to
the Surgery Center and drive you home after your procedure. If
you do not have some one to drive you, please call the
Surgery Center and we will arrange transportation for you.
- Do arrange for someone to remain with you for 24 hours
after surgery.
- All patients are urged to make appropriate arrangements
for care of children during their post-operative recovery
at home.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night
before surgery. This includes gum, hard candy, coffee,
tea or water. If you do not follow this rule, your
procedure may have to be rescheduled.
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours before surgery.
- One of our nurses will call you to go over your medical
history, your pre-admission testing, advise you of the
pre-operative instructions and answer any questions you
should have.
Day of Surgery
- Do take medication that has been instructed for you to
do by the nurse who called you. Take these medications
with only a sip of water.
- Do not wear contact lenses.
- Do not bring anything valuable with you, for example:
jewelry, watches, cash, credit cards.
- Do shower or bathe the morning of surgery or night before
surgery.
- Do not use powders, lotions, creams or oils. Deodorants
may be used.
- Do wear comfortable clothing that you can easily change
into and will not constrict the site of the surgery.
- Dentures and hearing aids may be worn.
- Do bring your insurance card and/or Medicare card and
picture ID with you.
- Do arrive at ACES ½ to 1 hour before surgery,
unless instructed otherwise.
- Do bring X-Ray’s or MRI’s or the reports
with you to the surgery center pertaining to your surgery.
- Do bring crutches or any assistive devices.
Following Surgery
- Expect to spend approximately 30-60 minutes in the Recovery
Room (PACU) and additional time in the Step-down recovery
area for care and instructions before going home.
- YOU MUST HAVE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT DRIVE YOU HOME AND
STAY WITH YOU ON THE DAY OF SURGERY, UNLESS TRANSPORTATION
HAS BEEN ARRANGED FOR YOU.
- Nurses and doctors will answer your questions and go
over your post-surgical instructions. You will receive
a written copy of these instructions. Please follow them
carefully.
- For 24 hours after the surgery DO Not:
- Drive any vehicle
- Operate any machinery
- Lift anything heavy
- Make any important decisions
- Sign any legal documents
- Drink alcoholic beverages
- Assume responsibility for care of others
- Take sleeping pills or tranquilizers without a doctor’s
permission
- Do Not take part in any strenuous activity until advised
by your doctor
- Follow your post-operative instructions given by your
doctor
- One of our nurses will call you the day following your
surgery to make sure you are recovering comfortably. If
the nurse is unable to get a hold of you they will try
again on another day.
- If you are experiencing any high fevers, excessive bleeding
or extreme pain and discomfort, please contact your doctor
immediately.
